In case of a gas leak or need to shut off the gas.

All you do is

Turn the small rectangle metal piece perpendicular to the gas line. Go look at yours. If you don’t see it or understand how to shut it off, just call the gas company and they will show you.

Note you will usually need a tool or wrench, because it is too hard to turn by hand.
